CYC: So how long is your commute?
Amy: Mine's not far at all, Seventeenth and Sansom, eight blocks, nine blocks.
CYC: you have bags . . .
Amy: These are for child seats. We have two kids.
CYC: Oh for child seats ! Do they think its fun? Do they like it?
Amy: Oh yeah they love it.
Adam: Amy walks and drops off our child, and picks up her bike here. Bikes to work, bikes back and parks the bike and picks up our child.
CYC: Do they say bike bike bike ?
Amy: Yeah they're ready to go, they put they're helmets on.
CYC: Do they have a funny phrase or anything?
Amy: Nah. more like "faster!" Abbey doesn't like it when I stand up she says "tushy down mom!" when I'm trying to make it up a hill.
CYC: So it sounds like for personal reasons it seems well considered um inexpensive, it's quick. Any bigger issues you're thinking about?
Amy: As far as the environment? I'd like to say that would be a thought of ours but it's all about convenience. We're perpetually running to get the kids.
CYC: How 'bout winter do you guys ride in the winter?
Adam: As long as I can, I'll go November December until it gets too bitter.
Amy: Until it gets too bitter or icy yeah.
CYC: I'm glad to see you guys are wearing your helmets too.
Adam: Hear that hon?
Amy: Adam told me he'd slash my tires if didn't.
CYC: Why are you on your bike today? Brett: I'm on my bike becuz I'm heading home. CYC: Do you bike everyday? Brett: I do. CYC: Why do you do that as opposed to helicopter or . . . Brett: It's economic it's environmental too. I owned a car for a very short time and I won't own a car again for a long time just because I think they're ridiculous and kind of silly. CYC: Why is that? Why do you think that cars are ridiculous and silly? Brett: Maybe not the car itself but the ownership. CYC: In cities in general and Philadelphia particularly it makes more sense not to own a car. Brett: It would seem so. Some people own cars cuz public transportation is not up to snuff CYC: Chicago's pretty good and I was just in New York actually and you can get anywhere. Brett: New yorks awesome. HEY! What's up! CYC: Is that some friends over there? Brett: Yeah. CYC: That's one thing I like about riding bikes. If you're in a car riding by you may not connect and it's a nice city thing. Brett: I talked to a woman last night visiting from LA. When she's walking around Philadelphia she constantly runs in to people and she doesn't like it. In LA ,she's in her car, she never has to deal with that. She never gets behind schedule. It's kind of what you're about.
CYC: Why are you on your bike right now?
Tom: Going to work.
CYC: Why do you choose to ride your bike to work?
Tom: A lot of reasons, it's cheaper, I don't own a car, I don't pay for gas, I don't pay for for insurance, I don't pay for upkeep. It's better for the environment an' it just makes me feel good. It's excercise every day.
CYC: You talked about the environment.
Tom: I guess pollution but also the city environment. I feel cities should be more pedestrian oriented. More like European cities like Amsterdam that has seperate bike lanes you can use, community bikes where you put in a dollar or whatever. And that all appeals to me and just doing my own little thing.
